Background and aim: Lifestyle is a unique concept that includes all general life processes. By evaluating lifestyle, predictions can be made about various dimensions of health. Considering the importance of evaluating lifestyle, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of lifestyle on various aspects of health.
Materials and methods: This is a narrative review. Search was done on Persian databases SID, Magiran and IranDoc as well as English databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane and Google Scholar search engine from 2011 to 2023. The keywords included lifestyle, healthy lifestyle, definition, attribute, outcome, or a combination of these keywords, which were searched separately or combined. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 100 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were finally reviewed.
Findings: Given the broad concept of health, indicators of a health-oriented lifestyle fall into a wide range of individual, environmental, social, cultural, and economic factors. Overall, the results of studies, including the findings of systematic reviews, indicate the effect of a healthy lifestyle on various dimensions of physical, mental, social, emotional, and even spiritual health.
Conclusion: Lifestyle is a multidimensional and complex concept, influenced by values and beliefs, and leads to numerous consequences. Changing and modifying lifestyle is one of the important points in improving and promoting the health of individuals and communities. Health education models can be effective in modifying lifestyle in this context. Family and social factors should also be considered in changing lifestyle.
