Background and aim: Professional dress code can influence patients’ social perceptions and interpersonal professional interactions. This paper aims to determine the role of perceptual determinants in the professional appearance of healthcare providers on professional interactions with patients. Materials and methods: The present study was conducted as a critical review by searching libraries and databases using the keywords dress code, hijab, professional attire, and professional interaction and professionalism, taking into account the inclusion criteria. Finally, 18 relevant articles were reviewed. Findings: The results are presented in two general sections: the impact of dress code, tattoos, and piercings on professional interactions, and the Islamic and Quranic perspective and approaches regarding professional attire. Tattoos, piercings, and unconventional attire of healthcare providers negatively affect professional interactions with patients. In most Islamic and non-Islamic countries, patients have more trust in healthcare providers with simple white coats, including long coats for women and white coats for men, and they usually prefer individuals without tattoos and piercings to be responsible for their care. Conclusion: Considering the importance of professional attire in Islam and the Quran and its role in shaping patients’ trust and professional relationships, it is recommended that healthcare centers have special supervision over the attire of healthcare providers.
