Background and aim: The successful performance of armed forces of countries is not only due to advanced technology and equipment. More than anything, it depends on their physical, mental and psychological health. A military job is one of the jobs that is difficult due to the type of tasks and missions, strict rules, the possibility of injury and disability, fear of defeat, being away from family, living in harsh conditions, captivity and even death, all of which may affect their mental health. Considering the importance of this topic, the role of spirituality and prayer in maintaining and improving the mental health of military forces has been discussed in the present study.
Materials and methods: This review article was conducted by searching several online databases or search engines, including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and SID until the end of 2023; 136 relevant articles were eventually selected.
Findings: Spirituality can bring about a sense of hope, purpose, peace, and improved organizational performance. In prayer, remembering God increases self-confidence, calms the nerves, and reduces stress and anxiety, even in very difficult military situations. Wudu (ablution), the use of perfume, strengthening the spirit of gratitude, improving physical health, increasing vitality and resilience, and eliminating the sense of inferiority of individuals with lower military ranks in front of superiors by attending congregational prayers are among the important functions of prayer in maintaining and promoting the mental health of military forces.
Conclusion: Deepening spirituality and seeking help from prayer is one of the most important ways to maintain and improve the mental health of military forces. Therefore, it is essential for planners and officials to pay more attention and plan to carry out appropriate interventions to improve knowledge and attitudes and explain the psychological effects and functions of spirituality, and especially prayer, on mental health. |
