Background and aim: Stigma in mental illnesses can be described as a set of negative attitudes and beliefs that cause fear, rejection, avoidance and discrimination against people. Stigma towards people with mental illness is influenced by many factors. Religious beliefs also have a significant impact on the beliefs and attitudes of people towards people with mental illness. Attitudes towards mental illness are also shaped by mental health literacy, that is, knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders that help recognize, manage or prevent them. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine the association between spiritual intelligence, level of mental health literacy and the proportion of patients with mental illnesses among Babol medical students. Materials and methods: In this study, we investigated the relationship between personality traits, religious beliefs and the level of mental health literacy in Babol medical students. 262 medical students completed three questionnaires of attitudes towards mental illness, spiritual intelligence and mental health literacy in each of the four academic levels and the results were evaluated. The data were analyzed using SPSS 24. Findings: 262 students completed the study. 117 were men (44.7%) and 145 were women (55.3%). The mean age of the students was 22.89 ± 2.24 years. 18 students (6.9%) were married and 244 students (93.1%) were single. The results of the linear regression showed that among the two important variables of mental health literacy and spiritual intelligence, the variable of mental health literacy was related to the stigma of mental illness both in the univariate analysis and in the multivariate regression analysis (p-value<0.005). Therefore, the variable of mental health literacy is a strong independent predictor variable for the status of stigma regarding mental illness in students. Conclusion: By increasing mental health literacy, the attitude towards mental illnesses improves and the negative consequences of stigma towards mental illness can be prevented.
